I’m Coming Back to Melbourne
Over the years, I’ve had a number of Melburnians ask me when I would next be visiting the city – and I’d struggle to convey in the most polite way possible, the fact that Melbourne has never featured in any of yours truly’s “dream holiday destinations” lists (runs away…).
Well, now that I’ve lost Melbourne (come on, don’t be so thin-skinned), I’ll just say that it’s finally happening.
On Saturday 26 September (ie. just a couple of weeks away), I’ll be flying down to do some cooking demos and engage with the audience at the inaugural SG x MY Festival (website – SGMYFest.com.au) .

This is the first time I’ll be in Melbourne in more than ten years – but prior to this, it’s always been purely for work.
The last time I was there, it was as the face of the Malaysia Kitchen to the World campaign run by the Malaysian government.
Before that, I’d travelled to Melbourne a number of times, but it was always in a FIFO (fly in, fly out) capacity to appear in TV cooking segments (arrive dead early while it’s cold and drizzly, head straight to the studios, leave after dark on the same day, still cold and drizzly) because for some baffling reason, a lot of Australian cooking shows are actually filmed there – back in the day, at least.
I’ve also been there to do cooking demos for Tourism Malaysia, and one time, for a pop-up dinner at a rural Victorian winery (the latter is not technically Melbourne, I am aware).
In other words, I’ve never actually spent any R&R time in Melbourne so I’m completely clueless about the city. This time though, it’ll be different because South African Paul thought we could treat it as a mini break for the family, so we’re going to be there for three nights.
I’m there under the auspices of Kaki Culture Club Inc., the organisers of the inaugural SGxMYFest.
The event is going to be Melbourne’s biggest Singapore and Malaysia Festival ever, with 6 hours comedy, food, sports, games, music, culture and family fun.

I’m going to do a couple of cooking demonstrations at Singapore hawker food specialists KMT Cuisines’ marquee, and I’ll be having a conversation with Singaporean TV personality and comedian Gurmit Singh during one of these sessions.
I’ve not finalised what I’ll be demo-ing yet, but as with all my cooking sessions, the aim is to share some of the cooking hacks I’ve accumulated over the last three decades of selling Malaysian hawker food in Sydney.
If you let me know ahead of time you will be attending, I’ll bring you a small gift from Sydney that you can pick up from my stand on the day.
