Yes of course I'm aware "Muslim" is not the exclusive domain of the Malay race but this article is in reference to misconceptions about MALAYSIAN food and people confusing Malaysian with Malay when in fact Malaysian refers to a nationality whereas Malay refers to an ethnicity. Not all Muslims are Malay but all Malays are Muslim and this point refers to people who KNOW that Malays are Muslim and therefore MalaySIAN food must be Muslim and therefore Halal, which is clearly wrong. Having lived outside of Malaysia for over 30 years I am acutely aware of the confusion by virtue of the number of times I'm referred to as a MALAY as opposed to a Malaysian.

I must point out yet another misconception: in point 4 you associate Halal with Malay. Malay is ethnicity. Halal is a religious requirement/requisite. When someone embrace Islam than he or she is a Muslim. Eating Halal food is applicable to Muslims regardless of one's ethnicity. I may be a Persian but if I am a Muslim, it means I eat Halal food. More so in Malaysia, there are a lot of Indians and Chinese who are Muslims. They eat Halal food. They are not Malays.

Steve, I'm aware of "roti" being an Indian word, but there's some dispute about whether "Canai" is derived from "Chennai" or from "Channa" dal, or from the Malay word "canai" which means "to knead".

When I initially commented I clicked the "Notify me when new comments are added"
checkbox and now each time a comment is added I get three e-mails with the same comment.

Is there any way you can remove me from that service?

Many thanks!

Actually, the word 'roti' is an Indian word. Malaysian's simply incorporated it into their own language (like countless other words in Malay). Chanai, is the former name of Madras which is in India. So, roti chanai literally means Bread from Chanai (Madras).

I appreciate that last sentence of #1. Just because it serves few Malay dishes doesn't mean it's not authentically Malaysian.
